“Exams, Examination Hall, Syllabus, Revisions, and Running Time”; each one of us frets about these terms during the exam time. As students of schools and colleges, we have always felt the stress and pressure of studies, especially during the exams. But, does the anxiety and exam pressure is limited only to the students? No. We, as parents fear exam time too. We get really worried about our child’s performance in the exam and try every possible way to help him score well. In a recent survey, it was noted that nearly 66% of the students face pressure from the parents for good grades in academics. This blog will precisely discuss a few tips for the parents to beat the exam stress and groom his child for his upcoming exams.
- Don’t Over-Pressurize: Parents support is a must for the child during the exam time. But we, as parents, should also understand that over-pressurizing the child for the exam might adversely affect his results. Always remember that every child has his/her pace of learning and any kind of extreme pressure from your side might make him all the more stressful.
- Be Attentive: Parents must always be an attentive listener to their child’s doubts and queries. We must never consider our child’s opinion on any subject as unworthy and useless. Listening attentively to your child will not only initiate a healthy communication but will also instill in your child reasoning abilities.
- Be Regular: Most of the Parents negate their child’s studies in their busy schedules. But, it is very important that the child’s studies are monitored on regular basis. Regular sessions will help the child to get a more clear understanding of the subject and will also lessen the pressure during the exam time.
- Provide Nutritious Food: Parents should also take care that the child is getting adequate and nutritious food. Their diet must include fresh fruits and green vegetables as well as nuts. Eating healthy food will keep the child fit, improve his concentration, and sharpen his brain. Whereas, on the other hand eating Junk food will severely affect his health, and reduce his concentration level.
- Give them Rest: Consistently studying for long hours reduces the memory’s power to retain the knowledge. Therefore, Parents must never burden their child with studies. We, as parents, must always give our child adequate rest through short intervals of breaks during studies. A little bit of exercise, stretching, listening to music, outdoor games, and proper sleep might help the child to re-energize himself.
- Emotional Support: Children get very stressed and anxious about their performance in the exams and at this time, it is very important that they get full support from their parents. Parents should act as like best friend and guardian of the child. They must give them emotional support at every step.
- Never Judge: Parents must never question the abilities and caliber of the child on the basis of his score in the exams. We should always refrain ourselves from saying anything that might hurt the sentiments of the child and make him feel like a liability. A Score in the exams does not necessarily reflect the sensibility of the child.
- Less Distraction: Parents should also give their child a proper room to study. Any kind of noise such as conversations, chats, TV, and music might distract the child from his studies. Therefore, it is very crucial that the child is given a proper room to study during the exam time.
According to the psychologists, exam stress might cause headaches, migraine, muscle pain, no appetite, difficulty in sleeping, increased irritability, mood swings, and difficulty concentrating Parents should understand that every child is unique and is talented in his own way. A survey report found that “India has one of the highest rates of suicides amongst people aged 15 to 29 as a result of the failure of examination, unemployment, and depression”.
No doubt, that the Parents feel responsible and concerned towards the child, but any kind of unnecessary interference might affect the self-esteem of the child. He might feel being questioned about his abilities. Parents should understand that academic performance can never be equated with the child’s potential. We are simply required to support the child in his studies and motivate him to do better. We should act as the pillar of support and strength for the child.
